Judge Rejects Federal Antitrust, Racketeering Charges in Account ...

Plaintiffs in a class action suit against commercial insurers and brokers for alleged bid rigging and account steering have failed to show that the defendants' actions amounted to fraud under federal racketeering statutes or violated federal antitrust laws, a federal judge in New Jersey has ruled in dismissing the charges.

Judge Garrett E. Brown Jr. in U.S. District Court in Newark, N.J., found that the plaintiffs failed to support their assertions that insurers and brokers conspired to suppress competition and fraudulently sell insurance and benefits by agreeing on certain bid-rigging, account steering and contingent commission arrangements.

The judge did, however, give plaintiffs one more shot, granting them a 30 day window to come back with an amended case addressing his concerns.

Major Iowans: Before Johnson — Fleck won US Open

This article was first published April 2, 1972 when Jack Fleck was inducted into The Register's sports hall of fame. Fleck, of Davenport, was the only native Iowan before Johnson to win a major golf championship.

There have been large bombs exploded that caused less commotion than the news, frantically flashed out of San Francisco on June 18, 1955, that Jack Fleck had tied Ben Hogan for the U.S. Open title.

Hogan didn't take explanation at all. The dominant figure in professional golf, the Wee Iceman had claimed four of the previous seven Opens and might have had more if he hadn't been slowed by a near-fatal car crash in 1949.

The truth of it was, Bantam Ben was in fairly early on that memorable Saturday with a par 70 over the Olympic Country Club for a 287 and more than a few congratulated him for an unprecedented fifth title.

MRI for Diagnosis of Cancer in the Opposite Breast: Questions and ...

This study sought to determine whether magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could improve the ability to accurately diagnose the full extent of a patient's disease, including possible cancers in the opposite (or contralateral) breast at the time of the initial diagnosis. (Question 1) Investigators found that the vast majority of additional cancers can be found at the time of initial diagnosis if MRI is added to clinical breast exam and mammography as part of a thorough workup. (Question 3) 30 women in this study who were diagnosed with cancer in one breast, and determined by mammography and clinical breast exam to be cancer free in the opposite breast, had cancer in the opposite breast diagnosed by MRI. (Question 5) A variety of cancers were identified through MRI. In general, those cancers were at an earlier stage than cancers found in other types of exams, which usually improves outcomes.

Grand Strand condo sales plummet

MYRLTE BEACH, S.C. - Grand Strand condominium sales dropped 41 percent in the first quarter, falling to a sales level that's lower than in the same quarter in the past three years - and the largest quarterly drop in sales in the past year.

The drop didn't surprise real estate analysts, considering the market's investor exodus and skyrocketing insurance costs.

But they were surprised that condo sales didn't at least grow above 2004 levels, when 1,040 condos sold on the Grand Strand.

This year in the first quarter 901 sold on the Strand, according to the Multiple Listing Service for Horry and Georgetown counties.

The question is, when does the market stop dropping and start going up?

Oceanfront condo agents report that investors are returning to the market, and those investors say they think the price bottom has either been hit or will hit soon.

For many employees, fitness has its prize

Megan from marketing got two televisions, a DVD player, an Xbox 360 and two iPods. Vicki from training got a digital camera, a GPS navigation system and a Bose speaker dock with her iPod. Ben and So Youn, the couple from the lab, got a 42-inch flat-screen TV for their living room. And the list goes on for workers at Ottawa Dental Laboratory outside Chicago. Their health plan gives them "bucks" for getting in shape, quitting smoking, lowering their cholesterol or managing chronic conditions such as diabetes or asthma. They use the bucks to get merchandise on the health plan's Web site - items including luxury watches, barbecue grills and mountain bikes. "The shopping is great,"' said Vicki Stacey, 53, who earns her bucks by, among other things, exercising at least four times a week. And "I feel real good," she said.
