What Home Insurance Do I Need?

You need two types of home insurance; they are buildings insurance and contents insurance. Mortgage providers will require you to have buildings insurance as a condition of your mortgage loan. Buildings insurance covers you in case your home falls or burns down, floods or is damaged by subsidence. It also covers fixtures that can reasonably be considered as permanent (e.g. baths, toilets etc.), and may also cover garden sheds, greenhouses and other outbuildings.

Home contents insurance covers your possessions, including everything from bedding and carpets to jewellery. If you can reasonably remove it and take it with you when you move, then it should be covered by your home contents insurance.

There is a wide range of both types of home insurance on the market.

Read policy fine print for long-term care

Long-term-care insurance can help ensure future nursing-home expenses don't burden children or grandchildren or force seniors to turn to government health-care programs such as Medicaid. The insurance is designed to protect assets and give people peace of mind.

But that's assuming the insurer actually pays the bills when a policyholder enters a long-term-care facility.

According to an investigation by the New York Times, some long-term-care insurers are denying a substantial number of claims. Some insurers have "developed procedures that make it difficult - if not impossible - for policyholders to get paid," the Times reported, citing findings that in California, one in every four long-term-care claims was denied in 2005.

The Times tells the story of Mary Rose Derks, who bought a long-term-care insurance policy from a door-to-door salesman in 1990.

A GIFT OF LIFE: Local families touched by tragedy, miracles tell ...

Danielle Keller used to think of organ donation recipients as people whose healthy organs had just worn out."I didn't realize how many children who were waiting, who never had a chance, who were never born with healthy organs, who really haven't had a chance to live life," Keller said. That changed when her daughter, Lexi, was born. Danielle and Nicholas Keller's firstborn had a severe heart defect that required surgery while she was an infant. Four years later, the little girl had open heart surgery, which was followed by a heart transplant that summer at Children's Hospital Boston."She was in a medically-induced coma," Danielle Keller said. "She didn't know she had a transplant until she woke up."Lexi Keller, now 7, doesn't remember much about being in the hospital except that she was scared.

Town Council Notes: Byrd students get a taste of public service

Every spring selected seniors from the government class at William Byrd High School get to sit in on a regular Vinton Town Council meeting. Then the students have a chance to hold their own mock council session the next day. Tuesday night the students who attended the regular meeting saw an exercise in democracy that was livelier than most council proceedings - mainly because of an issue involving their school. After some discussion, the real town council voted as expected to hold the Fourth of July fireworks celebration at William Byrd High School in Roanoke County, since the War Memorial site within the town limits of Vinton is not an option this summer because of ongoing construction. "We'd hoped it would be a one-year relocation," said Town Manager Kevin Boggess, referring to the fireworks, music and concessions staged at the Byrd football stadium last year.

St. Louis fire latest in long line of blazes

Over the years, significant fires in the area have ravaged buildings, injured firefighters and in some of the worst cases, killed loved ones.

The most recent blaze occurred overnight March 19 at the former St. Louis Church a building whose twin steeples towered above Fond du Lac for 135 years near the corner of Macy and Follett streets. No one was injured in the blaze and the cause remains under investigation.

Building owner Dave Haase was planning to move his sporting goods business into the historic landmark this month.

The Reporter has compiled a list of some of the most devastating fires that have occurred in the Fond du Lac area.

The night the churches burned

On Sept. 25, 1908, at least three Fond du Lac churches caught fire in what became known as "the night the churches burned." Local historians consider it the most dramatic fire in Fond du Lac history.

Roughnecks sign Tyler Francey

Calgary, AB - When Tyler Francey was signed by the Roughnecks prior to the National Lacrosse League's March trade deadline, it was mainly for insurance in case he was needed to perform in a late season back-to-back weekend.

The premium was well worth the cost, because Francey will don a Calgary jersey for the first time when the Riggers travel to Phoenix this Friday.

Recent losses to Portland and Edmonton have put the club's playoff hopes in jeopardy and the newcomer will be asked to solidify what all too frequently has been a porous back end.

"Tyler is a player (Head Coach) Jeff Dowling knows very well," Kurt Silcott, the Roughnecks General Manager, said today, "because they were in New York together earlier in the year.

"He is a solid stay-at-home defender with a good deal of experience in the NLL and we have no hesitation in introducing him into our line-up."

Silcott added, "We will Tyler ready for the Arizona Sting on Friday, and this will allow us to rest veteran Andy Ogilvie for Saturday in Edmonton, our last game of the regular season."

To find room on the roster for Francey, Brenan Day has been released.

In Japan, private health care filling public gaps

TOKYO: Johns Hopkins Hospital, taking advantage of Japan's dissatisfaction with public health care, has started a clinic in Tokyo that charges as much as ¥2 million for a three-day medical checkup.

The Tokyo Midtown Medical Center, which opened March 30 in the city's tallest office tower, is a venture involving Johns Hopkins as well as Mitsui Fudosan and Resorttrust. The clinic is the latest of seven overseas projects since 2006 for Hopkins, based in Baltimore, which has topped U.S. News & World Report's ranking of best U.S. hospitals the past 16 years.

Medical care for an aging population is absorbing more than 40 percent of the government's health budget, leaving less money for hospital emergency rooms and clinics. Almost half of Tokyo residents say they are frustrated by long waiting times at hospitals, a city government survey shows.

Maine Gov. Baldacci Releases Series of Proposals To Expand Health ...

Maine Gov. John Baldacci (D) on Wednesday unveiled a set of proposals to expand health care coverage in the state, including a plan that would require many residents to obtain health insurance, the Portland Press Herald reports (Carrier, Portland Press Herald, 4/5). Under the plan, Maine residents with annual incomes more than 400% of the federal poverty level would be required to purchase health coverage. Employers would be required to take part in a "pay or play" system, in which they would have to offer health care coverage to workers or contribute to a state fund that would subsidize health coverage costs. In addition, the proposal would create a "reinsurance" plan that would move high-cost health care consumers into a separate risk pool. Employers also would be able to charge higher monthly premiums for some groups.

Help available for problems with insurance company

It signs them up, and when called to cancel their plans, has been ignoring phone and written requests to do so. When clients are told via phone conversations that they are cancelled, there is no written notification to Medicare or anyone else, and they are left hanging in a "dead zone."When they do actually receive written notice, there are major errors in the date of supposed cancellation. This has happened to my mother. She is disabled, poor and cannot pay any of the expenses incurred due to this company's negligence. We learned that a wonderful, kind lady named Joann at SEACUS is handling these complaints. She is a volunteer. She knows of at least five others who are having these same problems. Senior citizens having problems with their insurance should contact her at 428-3229.Is this company committing fraud, or does it just not know what it is doing?Thank you for this opportunity! I hope this helps more people.Sincerely,Rhonda KimblePima .

Mobile wireless communications are now a major piece of the enterprise telecommunications puzzle. It has become a business imperative for all companies. However, the costs and risks associated with mobile wireless communications are in an unrestrained spiral.

Management of mobile wireless communication can be bifurcated into 1) expense management, and 2) access management. Today, management solutions address mobile wireless management separate from other enterprise telecommunication management
solutions.

While there are numerous expense management challenges presented by mobile wireless communications, the more significant issue is the security risk resulting from information leakage posed by mobile access - devices and users accessing enterprise information resources.
