Health-Care System Isn't Healthy, But Insurers' Bottom Lines Are

Dear Mr. Berko: When you spoke at the fundraiser for our church about the future of our country, you pointedly said that we must have a single-payer health-care system. You noted that there are 41 million uninsured in the country who can't afford health care. You said they must have medical access but (and the following are your words) "the health-insurance industry's intentional high costs exclude them from participation." Are you nuts or something? How can you preach such socialistic ideas in a capitalistic society? They would be able to afford health care if they were worth more to their employers so they would be paid better. Do you know how much our leftist government has screwed up our country? And it would do the same without a private health- care system if we allowed it to happen.

SC Senate begins work on state's $7.3 billion budget

COLUMBIA, S.C. South Carolina senators today began dissecting a seven-point-three (b) billion dollar state spending plan.

The plan includes a pay raise for state employees, new public school buses and health insurance for more poor children.

An 81 (m) million dollar income tax cut for the state's top earners is expected to be a main point of contention throughout the debate.

The head of the Senate Finance Committee, which began discussing the plan today, has proposed eliminating the sales tax on groceries.

Chairman Hugh Leatherman wants to cut that rate to two cents from three cents on the dollar starting January First. That would take roughly 40 (m) million dollars.

The proposal calls for incremental half-cent cuts that would eventually get rid of the tax.

Lott finally hits his stride

--His own political and personal struggles, coupled with a post-Katrina Coast in need, have rejuvenated U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, leading his wife, Tricia, to remark that he has finally hit his stride in his 35th year on Capitol Hill.

Lott shared his wife's observation Wednesday as he spoke at an Edgewater Rotary Club luncheon, where insurance was one of the main topics.

He said insurers assumed they could mistreat Mississippians after Hurricane Katrina, as they have done to customers in Florida and Alabama.

"You may try it and you may get away with it, but you're going to go through the wringer before you get there because we're not going to take it," Lott said as Rotarians applauded. He decried record industry profits and an 82 percent pay increase for State Farm CEO Edward Rust Jr.
