New Miami fiscal officer presents bond
NEW MIAMI — New Miami may never know if the Butler County auditor's threat was a bluff because the village's fiscal officer appears to have obtained an insurance bond — just as she demanded. New Miami Fiscal Officer Joseph Ebbing presented village council a $20,000 bond on Thursday to protect village funds if lost or misappropriated, Village Solicitor Gary Sheets said .
How much is too much to save family pet’s life?
That number has steadily increased, but the biggest change, Phillips said, concerns whos spending the most money. About 10 years ago, 60 percent of the medication money was spent on livestock and 40 percent on pets or companion animals. Now, its 60 percent for pets and 40 percent for livestock. Many veterinarians and pet owners say that as long as theres a good chance for recovery, its reasonable to put thousands of dollars into saving a pet how much is up to the owner. Instead of remodeling a kitchen, shed rather plunk down $20,000 for her dog, said Dr. Terri DeFrancesco, the associate professor of critical care and cardiology who helped care for Phipps dog at North Carolina State. He does have a good prognosis. Tonys doctors hope that he will live at least another six years.
The Insider: Hot data center sector spawning consultants
WE WANT ONE OF THOSE: Like music and clothes, economic development has its hot fads and trends that everyone chases. One year it's software companies, the next biotech. So what's the big deal in economic development these days? Data centers. Washington has been in the thick of it, with companies like Ask.com (Moses Lake), Intuit and Microsoft (both in Quincy) and Yahoo (Wenatchee) all building or planning data centers in the state, in part to take advantage of cheap electricity prices. It's so hot a sector these days that there are actually consultants specializing in helping communities attract server farms. The Yakima County Development Association, operating as New Vision, reports that consulting firm AngelouEconomics, based in Austin, Texas, will spend two days in the area in late April evaluating it as a potential site for data centers.

Tips to Avoid Travel Disasters
Sean Carroll (Rochester, N.Y.) -- Two passengers are still missing from a cruise ship that went down off the shores of Greece on Thursday. Rochester travel agent Paula Olney, who was on that same ship in March, is now urging clients to take steps to avoid or at least prepare for such a disaster.Olney said she couldn't help but think of her last cruise as she watched the Sea Diamond sink into the Aegean Sea on television this weekend. "I kept thinking, ‘Oh my gosh! We were just there. We were just in this room, and that room, and that dining room,'" she said. The captain of the Sea Diamond said that strong currents caused the 1,500 passengers and crew members to abandon ship last week. He is now facing criminal charges. Olney's experience taking and booking cruises leads her to believe the captain's claims that the sea was rough.
News From USW: USW Condemns Appalachian Regional Healthcare Claim ...
Pittsburgh - PITTSBURGH -- News From USW: Appalachian Regional Healthcare made public a proposed contract yesterday despite the fact that it had promised the United Steelworkers additional information that could significantly change what ARH is offering. "This just isn't right," said Ernest R. "Billy" Thompson, director of USW District 8. He has led negotiations for the 2,700 striking workers in Kentucky and West Virginia since January and said that until yesterday, ARH never gave the steelworkers a comprehensive written proposal, and this one can't be considered complete because ARH has promised USW additional information that may well alter health insurance and other aspects of the document. "They offer us something, then take it back, offer it again later. This is the craziest bargaining I've ever been involved in.
Farm bill forum focuses on dairy aid program
The extension of a dairy payment program set up to help dairy producers when milk prices drop was one of the key points of conversation Thursday at a 2007 Farm Bill Forum in Green Bay. About 100 people attended the session at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College with participants touching on topics ranging from international trade, conservation efforts, federal milk order system, and spending on nutrition programs. At the heart of the issue of the forum, which was sponsored by U.S. Rep. Steve Kagen, D-Appleton, was the Milk Income Loss Contract, which could see payment cuts by one-third under the proposed farm bill. Kaukauna-area dairy farmer Bernie Vanderheiden said the program has been helpful to him and other farmers as they have weathered low prices in recent years.

Americans giving their pets drugs, sometimes paying with health ...
WAYNE COUNTY, N.C. (AP) - With aging, it's become a routine faithfully endured by the Guffords. Each day starts with a blood sugar check and a shot of insulin. Then a couple of pills, maybe mashed into a bowl of tuna and canned carrots. Mixed with dry chow. All for their 12-year-old dog. Brownie takes more drugs than his human companions put together. He has been medicated in recent months for diabetes, infections, high blood pressure, and his finicky gut that rebels at red meat. Since 2005, he has taken drugs for everything from anemia to a spider bite. "He's our baby, he's a family member, I would want somebody to do that for me," explains Ann Gufford. She estimates spending $5,000 over the last two years on medicine for her baby, a mixed beagle-cocker spaniel.
Test makes a hard choice for women a bit easier
PHILADELPHIA - Like any newly diagnosed breast cancer patient, the only thing Barbara Fredericks dreaded more than having chemotherapy was not having it and later regretting the decision. So when her oncologist said surgery and a hormone drug would probably cure her early-stage cancer, Fredericks got a second opinion. That doctor recommended the clincher: OncotypeDX. The $3,500 test analyzed which genes were switched on in her tumor sample, then gauged the likelihood that her cancer would come back within a decade. Fredericks' "recurrence score" put her at low risk even if she skipped the time-consuming, costly, unpleasant rigors of chemotherapy. As she discovered, science is making progress toward the dream of "personalized" medicine - using new methods of molecular analysis to customize diagnosis and treatment.
A Bit of Help
"Today I received a refurbished Gateway GT5032 computer with a 90-day warranty. There was no note or explanation with the computer as to what had happened. Doing the math on the warranty, I am really getting screwed since the original computer was to have had a one-year warranty and I was only in possession of it for 2 months, but the replacement was a nice machine. I guess that is supposed to be my consolation. Gateway really sucks. So, the machine is now for sale on EBay. I am so fed up with Gateway I don't even want it in the house. Thanks for your help and I would really appreciate you sharing how inconsiderate and unresponsive Gateway was in this situation. I strongly encourage everyone to stay far away from Gateway." So what finally spurred Gateway to action - my story, the state attorney general, or just the sheer weight of the reader's own complaints? Who knows, but if you face a similar problem, my suggestion is you try all of the above.
Domestic and International Class Struggle in a Harmonious ...
In his eulogy at the graveside of Marx, Engels pointed to the two great discoveries of Marx, the discovery of the materialist concept of history and the discovery of surplus value as the source of capitalist profit. Surplus value is the difference between the value created by the worker and the value of the returned to the worker in the form of wages. Surplus value is therefore the value of the workers labor time that is appropriated by the capitalist. In this manner, Marx disclosed the irreconcilable conflict of interest between capital and laborthe capitalists striving to increase their profits by increasing the ratio of surplus value to the wages, while interest of the worker lies in decreasing that ratio. The struggle of the workers to raise their wages or to resist attempts by the capitalist lower them is what we refer to as class struggle.
