Farmers' Health Coop Insurance Takes Effect

More than 3,500 state farmers and agri-businesses have filed their applications for the new cooperative health insurance plan. According to the Wisconsin Federation of Cooperatives, the Farmers' Health Cooperative of Wisconsin program--which provides affordable, high-quality health insurance--took effect on April 1.

WFC President Bill Oemichen says he is very pleased with the high level of interest the cooperative is receiving.

"Many producers and agribusinesses have told us that we are providing the type of high quality insurance coverage they have been waiting for and that the insurance represents a very good value," said Oemichen. "This interest is translating to very strong enrollment rates in the cooperative."

FHCW's six plans range from low-premium, high-deductible coverage in conjunction with a Health Savings Account to a low-deductible plan aimed at agri-businesses.

eHealth: Bring us your uninsured

Vip Patel still isn't sure what made him sick shortly after he graduated Stanford University in 1985, but he does know why he didn't go to a doctor: He had no health insurance.

Stricken with what he believes was food poisoning, Patel stayed on his college roommate's floor and grew a lot sicker before recovering. That experience laid the groundwork for eHealth Inc., which Patel founded in 1997 as a tool to deliver health care to the uninsured by helping people find medical insurance over the Internet.

According to the Census Bureau, 46.6 million Americans don't have health insurance. That number is climbing as more businesses cut workers off from employer-provided health care because of escalating medical costs. In 2000, 69 percent of employers bought health insurance for their employees -- last year, that proportion fell to 61 percent.

Broker tips: Home Retail, Biffa, Resolution, easyJet, BAE

LONDON (SHARECAST) - Home Retail Group hit a new high today after Citigroup upgraded the Argos owner to 'buy' from 'hold' and raised its price target to 500p from 450p. The broker attributed its move to a more favourable risk/reward valuation, adding that possible bid speculation could at the very least reduce downside. It noted that the company was on the receiving end of a provisional offer prior to the demerger of GUS into Home Retail and Experian effective last October. Biffa tumbled though as the waste management company warned of bottom end full year revenue and profits, prompting Merrill Lynch to repeat its sell recommendation. The group, which blamed the news on reduced second half profits at the collection division, is on a pricey valuation of 11.2 times EV/EBITDA for 2007/8, said the broker.

The Augusta we don't see during the Masters

When the world says Augusta -- breathy, whispery, church-of-golf Augusta -- the world always, always, means the 365 acres of this city that lie behind a 12-foot hedge of bamboo, pearlbush and red-tipped photinia. Say Augusta and the world always means one week among 52. Before commercial breaks, the CBS cameras linger in soft focus almost indiscreetly on shots of flugelhorn azalea blossoms. Those same cameras never pan to the horizon. For just beyond the privet hedge lies a world that doesn't comport with the carefully tended, Truman Show-Sponsored-By-AT&T Masters soundstage. Beyond lies a messy Augusta that can't be tamed to that precise, 3/8-inch height of the fairways.

Outside that hedge is an Augusta that is by turns squalid, handsome, proud, defeated, race-haunted, yearning, mired, God-fearing and frequently utterly exasperating.

The Cost of (Not Getting) Cancer

Undergraduates who rush out to inoculate themselves with Gardasil, the new HPV or “cervical cancer" vaccine, are in for an unpleasant surprise. Through Harvard University Health Services (UHS), each Gardasil shot costs $154—and the full-course vaccination requires three of them. The total cost of the vaccination, $462, is prohibitively high. The University, through UHS, should follow the Massachussetts state government's lead in fighting cervical cancer and subsidize the vaccination's costs for women who want it. HPV is a common, sexually-transmitted disease caused by strains of the human papillomavirus group of viruses. The Center for Disease Control estimates that genital strains of HPV will infect over 50 percent of sexually active men and women at some point in their lives. Once someone is infected with the virus, he or she may remain asymptomatic or may develop genital warts.

Senate committee cuts hurricane mitigation largess

TALLAHASSEE -- The Senate Banking & Finance Committee is proposing a leaner version of a hurricane mitigation bill than one already passed by the House of Representatives.

The committee unanimously passed a bill today that would limit matching grants to 25 percent of the cost of home safety improvements, not to exceed $2,500. Low-income Floridians could qualify for an outright grant of no more than $2,500.

"It's time for Floridians to take responsibility for protecting their homes," said the bill's principal sponsor, said the committee's chairman, Sen. Bill Posey, R-Rockledge.

The bill also eliminates new roofs or roof reinforcements from the improvements that may qualify for hurricane mitigation grants. The state will grant money for opening protections -- mainly various types of storm shutters -- exterior doors, and the bracing of gable ends.
