ESCONDIDO -- An art exhibition that addresses illegal immigration and takes a jab at Councilman Sam Abed is too "political" and "divisive" to be displayed in the partially city-funded California Center for the Arts, Escondido, Abed said Wednesday. The exhibit, which is called "Mi Corazon Escondido," or "My Hidden Heart," was created by Cal State San Marcos professor David Avalos and other area teachers, students and artists. CITY OF TOLEDO Council ends battle over budget, trash fee
Toledo City Council ended a marathon process of negotiations and proposals by passing a final budget for fiscal year 2007 on March 30, just one day before the deadline for balanced budgets mandated by state law. When City Council failed to approve the final budget at its meeting March 27, it sent the budget negotiations into double overtime on Thursday and Friday. After two days of negotiating and voting, City Council President Rob Ludeman moved to add the revised amendments to the budget dated March 30, 2007, and further rescind all previous actions taken by Council on the budget. A roll call vote was taken on passage of the ordinance as an emergency measure and was approved 7-5. The amended budget included a monthly refuse fee of $5.50, or $3 for people who recycle.
City tries to recoup firemen OT pay
A divided City Commission voted 3-2 Tuesday night in favor of reclaiming half of the $122,000 worth of overpaid wages to the Pittsburg Fire Department. After nearly two hours of debate, Mayor Marty Beezley cast the deciding vote to recoup money that had been overpaid because of a payroll error in the city's human resources department. "I think this moves the process along," Beezley said after the vote. "Nobody is a winner." The payroll error, uncovered by auditors, was corrected in May 2006. Thirty firefighters received on average an extra $4,075 over the course of 2005 and the first four months of 2006. Salaried employees, including Fire Chief Don Elmer and the battalion chiefs, do not receive overtime pay and were not affected by the glitch.
