As premiums go down, pick up life insurance
The next time your party guests linger past your bedtime, ask them how they feel about life insurance. Watch that they don't trip over your cat as they sprint to the door. Nobody wants to talk about life insurance. But if you have young children or others who depend on you, you should have it. Millions of Americans have no life insurance, and millions more don't have enough to provide financial security for their loved ones. That's a shame, because if you're reasonably healthy, you can buy a lot of life insurance without spending a lot of money. Average premiums for individual life insurance have been falling about 5 percent a year since 2000, and they're expected to drop an additional 4 percent in 2007, according to the Insurance Information Institute. "The rates are as low as I've ever seen," says Byron Udell, CEO of AccuQuote, an online insurance broker.

Warren Buffett's Latest Play
Sydney, Apr 10, 2007 (ACN Newswire) - Last month when we looked at the investments and other activities of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, there were two unidentified holdings in which the company was building a position. The list was of investments with a market value greater than $US700 million. He told shareholders in his letter the two exceptions had a combined market value of $US1.9 billion but he didn't disclose their names "because we continue to buy them. I could of course, tell you their names. But then I would have to kill you.''Late last week Berkshire revealed it had built a 10.9 per cent stake in that most unfashionable of companies, the huge Burlington Northern Sante Fe railway and transport company (BNI) which now had a market value of $US 3.2 billion.Berkshire says it now owns 39 million shares of the second-largest US railroad as of April 5.The deal has surprised analysts who point out that the US railroad industry is fully priced at the moment with good operating margins and high valuations by investors.Buffett's stock purchases make him the largest shareholder, ahead of Marsico Capital Management LLC, which owned 32 million shares for an 8.9 percent stake in December.US brokers said Berkshire would have had to disclose the rail stake upon exceeding a 5 per cent threshold if Buffett was purchasing the Burlington Northern shares with the intent of making a takeover bid, seeking a board seat, or otherwise influencing management. But passive investors can wait until the end of the year to report 5 per cent holdings, but investors do have to file with the SEC within 10 days of reaching or exceeding a 10 per cent stake.According to the filing, Buffett paid $US81.18 to $US81.80 in three transactions on April 4 and April 5.
More People Taking Advantage Of Health Savings Accounts
New rules governing health savings accounts are making them more attractive to consumers, who can use HSAs to help reduce health insurance costs now - and, potentially, in retirement. Health savings accounts are like individual retirement accounts for health care. They were created by Congress in 2003 so workers could cover some of their medical costs with pretax money if they have high-deductible health insurance plans. The idea is that workers and their employers can fund the tax-free accounts, with withdrawals used for copays at doctors' offices, prescription and nonprescription medicines, and hospital services not covered by insurance. Because unused balances in the HSAs can be rolled over from year to year, some financial advisers are suggesting that the accounts can be a way for families to accumulate money to be used to cover health care costs in retirement, including Medicare deductibles and long-term care insurance.
SBA not allowed to forgive loans
The Answer Spot is a weekly feature that addresses your post-Hurricane Katrina questions. To submit a question, e-mail it to insurance@timespicayune.com. SBA Do you know whether the SBA forgives disaster loans secured by a mortgage after the sole and only borrower dies? As the estate has passed to a nonfamily member, is SBA likely to call the loan if there has been no sale of the property? Is it up for loan review or underwriting once again with a new owner? The Small Business Administration does not have the authority to forgive disaster loans. In this example, the SBA would act in accordance with terms in the mortgage agreement signed with the borrower. Generally, under the mortgage agreement, the loan is due and payable when the property is sold or transferred.
Women pay more
Only, as it turns out, women pay more. A Harvard Med School study found that average medical costs for both women and men came in under the $2,000 deductible (meaning insurance covered $0 of their costs) but women had more expensive health needs and so paid $1,000 more than men. Or, as the lead researcher put it: "High-deductible plans punish women for having breasts and uteruses and having babies," said Dr. Steffie Woolhandler, the study's lead author. "When an employer switches all his employees into a consumer-driven health plan, it's the same as giving all the women a $1,000 pay cut, on average, because women on average have $1,000 more in health costs than men." .
OIR: Underwriting tactics hurt minorities
The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation says insurers' use of work and schooling information for the underwriting and rating of auto insurance policies hurts minorities and the poor. Though the practice is legal, the practice creates unintended effects that the government may find unacceptable, said Kevin McCarty, insurance commissioner. In 2003, the Legislature passed a law severely limiting the use of credit scoring in insurance underwriting. .
Don't nix antitrust insurance law
In his guest column ("Need for 'reform' in America's insurance industry is obvious," March 12), U.S. Sen. Trent Lott targets the insurance industry's limited antitrust exemption, part of the McCarran-Ferguson Act, as a reason why insurance companies earned profits in 2005. While I admire his commitment to Katrina victims, I respectfully disagree with his remedy. The antitrust exemption didn't cause the problems and repealing it will only exacerbate the state's insurance crisis. First, let me say that I do not represent or speak for State Farm. As president of the Independent Insurance Agents of Mississippi, I speak for small businesses in communities across Mississippi. We know how devastating Katrina was to our state. Going forward, we need to make insurance more affordable and available.
Health care reform debate can begin
California's Health Care system is in need of reform. Choices are limited, costs are too high, and too many are without insurance. And while the reforms have probably been needed for quite some time, the issue has now captured the attention of the Governor and Legislative leaders, as several health care reform ideas have recently been presented forth as legislative proposals. In the Capitol, various reform strategies have emerged. Some plans have been based on a universal coverage, government run health care system that would only serve to increase costs, limit choice, and reduce access has been put forth. Other plans include mandates that increase taxes on small businesses to pay for health care. An alternative reform package, presented by Assembly Republicans, relies on a series of 19 different health care reform proposals that will ensure that consumers can pick the type of health care coverage they want and need, will reduce health care costs for everyone, and increase access for those without insurance.
Of power-sharing arrangements and conflict transformation
Two noteworthy stories made international news last week. The first one was from UK and a newspaper headline read, "Historic breakthrough: Britain rushes to enact historic N. Ireland deal" and the second, from North America went thus, "Québec federalists' win a boost for unity". In Belfast, arch enemies Ian Paisley of the Democratic Unionist Party and Gerry Adams of Sinn Fein created a watershed in Northern Irish politics when they held their first ever face-to-face meeting and agreed to restore power-sharing on May 8 - just hours before a midnight deadline set by Britain and Ireland. Meanwhile in Québec, the federalists won a close election dashing separatist hopes of holding another referendum on secession from Canada. Of particular significance was the unexpected surge in support for Action Démocratique du Québec (ADQ), the new kid on the block which favours greater autonomy for Québec but opposes secession.
